The Grand County High School Red Devils boys and girls basketball teams kicked off the region portion of their schedules this week.
The boys fell in a pair of close contests at home 65-57 to Richfield on Friday, Jan. 10, and 75-71 to South Sevier on Saturday, Jan. 11, after beating Grand Junction, Colorado, in a non-region contest on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Meanwhile, the Lady Red Devils lost 57-15 at Richfield on Friday, Jan. 10, and 78-14 at South Sevier on Saturday, Jan. 11.
The wrestling team lost on a tiebreaker 33-33 to San Juan at Senior Recognition Night on Tuesday, Jan. 7, before competing in the Gunnison Valley Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10 and 11.
The boys came from behind in the final quarter for the thrilling 85-82 victory against Grand Junction, outscoring the opposition 26-19. Luke Williams scored 26 points, while Kaine Allred and Eli Hazlett each had double-doubles. Allred had 25 points and 16 rebounds, while Hazlett had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
On Friday, the Richfield Wildcats jumped out to a 23-10 lead the Red Devils couldn't recover from, thanks in part to cold shooting. Allred had 19 points and Hazlett had 14. Ryelan Jones also pitched in with eight.
To finish the week versus South Sevier, the Red Devils and Rams went to overtime after a back-and-forth contest tied at 65-65 at the end of regulation. In the extra frame, the Rams outscored GCHS 10-6. Williams had 25 points, Milo Birdwell had 15 points, Allred had 15 points and Hazlett had 11 points.
The Red Devils were scheduled to play a non-region contest at Monticello on Tuesday, Jan. 14 and a region game at Emery on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Then next play at Carbon on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
The Lady Red Devils fell to Richfield 57-15 on Friday, Jan. 10, scoring only four points in the first half. Josalyn Murphy had 10 points.
The following day, South Sevier trounced the Lady Red Devils 78-14, holding them scoreless the entire second quarter. Megan Zunich led GCHS with six points.
The Lady Red Devils were scheduled to play host to Emery on Tuesday, Jan. 14, and are scheduled to play at home versus Carbon on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m., and at Pinnacle on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m.
The Red Devils battled to a 33-33 tie on senior night Tuesday, Jan. 7, in Moab, with the Broncos awarded the win on the criteria E tiebreaker. GCHS then competed in a tournament in Gunnison on Jan. 10 and 11, where GCHS placed ninth out of 18 teams. In the junior varsity category, Jaymmin Hester (285) and Blane Thompson (170) each took first place, while Jacob Kelley took third at 285. At 106 pounds, Landon Moralez took fifth in varsity and Oscar Flores took third in junior varsity.
The Red Devils are next slated to compete in a dual against Carbon in Price on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. GCHS is also scheduled for the San Juan County duals in Monticello on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
