The Grand County High School (GCHS) volleyball team earned a pair of dominant Region 12 victories, sweeping Carbon 3-0 in Moab, then winning 3-1 at Emery.
GCHS won the first two games handily against Carbon in the Devils' Den, 25-16 and 25-20, winning the close third set 25-23 to close out the Lady Dinos.
The Emery Lady Spartans won the first game 26-24, but GCHS won the next three 25-23, 25-18 and 25-14.
The Lady Red Devils close out their home schedule with senior recognition night Thursday, Oct. 3, against South Sevier, with varsity at 6:30 p.m.; then on Saturday, Oct. 5, they play Richfield with matches beginning at 1 p.m.
The Lady Red Devils had their senior recognition day on Thursday, Sept. 26, when they beat South Sevier 2-0 in Moab with both goals coming from Corah Moody. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, GCHS lost 8-2 to Richfield. The Lady Red Devils lost 8-0 to Carbon in Price on Tuesday, Oct. 1. On Thursday, Oct. 3, they're scheduled to play at San Juan in their regular-season finale.
The Red Devils tied with Carbon for second place for the day at the Palisades on Monday, Sept. 23, which maintained their second-place finish in the overall Region 12 standings. For the cumulative season, senior Luke Williams took second place in Region 12, while junior Rafe Saunders took fourth and sophomore Sage Stroder took ninth. With its second-place finish, GCHS automatically qualifies for the 3A state tournament, which is set for Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 2 and 3 in Roosevelt.
GCHS girls tennis played five road matches over two days on Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27, beating Gunnison 4-1 and Wasatch Academy 5-0 on Thursday in head-to-head matches. The next day at the North Sanpete tournament, GCHS beat the host Lady Hawks 4-1, but lost 4-1 to Richfield and 3-2 to Manti. Playing all three different singles positions over the two days, Kyla Jackman went 4-1. Playing four No. 1 singles matches and one No. 1 doubles match with teammate Jenny Kopell, Maara Holyoak went 3-2. In No. 2 doubles, Chloe Book teamed three teams with Stella McGowan and twice with Julia Crane for a 4-1 record overall.
The Lady Red Devils defeated San Juan 5-0 in Moab on Tuesday, Oct. 1, not dropping a single set.. The Lady Red Devils next compete at the Region 12 Championship tournament in Richfield/Monroe, currently scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4.
The Red Devils were stymied by the San Juan defense in Blanding in a 21-0 loss on Friday, Sept. 27, falling to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Region 12 play. Uncharacteristically for GCHS, senior quarterback Bryant Troutt passed the ball 35 times, completing 16 passes. The Red Devils, normally a run-heavy team, ran the ball just 22 times for 29 yards. Senior tight end Trea Meyer had eight catches for 33 yards, while junior wide receiver Ryelan Jones had three catches for 60 yards.
Defensively, the Red Devils forced five San Juan turnovers in the loss, as Jones and senior Brayden Cloud each tallied interceptions and seniors Morgan Alvey, Brayden Troutt and Clynn Backus had fumble recoveries. Alvey led GCHS with 14 tackles, while Brayden Troutt had 13 and Cloud had 12. Backus also had two sacks.
The Red Devils are scheduled to play at Carbon in a Region 12 game on Friday, Oct. 4. The Dinos are 1-5, 0-2 in Region 12 with a 42-0 loss to Richfield on Friday, Sept. 20 and a 26-21 loss to Emery on Friday, Sept. 27. Kickoff in Price between the Dinos and Red Devils is set for 7 p.m.
