The Grand County High School boys soccer team went 2-1 in its first week of action.
A fourth match for the high school team was reduced to a scrimmage because the officials didn’t show up.
The Grand County High School (GCHS) Red Devils boys soccer team beat Richfield 3-0 in an away match on Wednesday, March 5, before heading to a tournament in St. George over the weekend, where the Red Devils beat Union 4-0 and lost to Summit Academy 4-1, before losing an unofficial scrimmage to Layton Christian Academy (LCA) with a score of 5-4.
Versus Ricfhield, Oliver Perez earned his first of consecutive shutouts in the net, while Miguel Dominguez netted a pair of goals and Nolan Ramirez also scored a goal.
On the soccer field against Union, four different players scored goals: Bailey Shelton, Jose Taveres, Kane Scherer and Richard Shumway.
Scherer scored the lone goal versus Summit Academy in the Red Devils’ next match. Official stats weren’t kept for the scrimmage versus LCA.
“The boys have started off strong,” GCHS boys soccer coach Christopher Beitner said. “(Against Richfield) the boys exhibited some fine play on both sides of the ball.”
Beitner said the tournament in St. George boasted talented, competitive schools.
“The boys played extremely well, exceeding my high expectations of the potential that this season has to offer,” he said.
Beitner said the Red Devils have a lot more players than they’ve had in previous years, bringing an array of skill and abilities to the soccer program.
“It is very exciting to see the chemistry amongst all of these young men so early in the season, who have been playing soccer together for a very long time,” Beitner said.
The Red Devils’ next two soccer matches are on the road as they play at South Sevier on Thursday, March 14, and North Sanpete on Tuesday, March 19. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
