The Grand County High School (GCHS) Red Devils boys golf team took advantage of a tough course, shooting a 317 at the Millsite Golf Course in Ferron on Thursday, Aug. 22, taking first place in Region 12 competition hosted by Emery.
“The Millsite course was very narrow and unforgiving if you miss the fairway, but the boys were able to keep it in play,” GCHS boys golf coach Kristyon Saunders said.
GCHS senior Luke Williams took first at 71, followed by junior Rafe Saunders at 75. Corbin Mays shot 85, Tyler Bohannon shot 86, Wyatt Miller shot 89, Dylan Shocknmyer shot 90, Sage Stroder shot 91 and Jayden Nelson shot 110.
The Red Devils bested Richfield by six strokes and region front-runner Carbon by 10. South Sevier was a distant fourth at 363, Emery was fifth at 376 and San Juan took sixth at 403. After four meets, the Red Devils sit second at 1,313 strokes, 38 strokes behind the Dinos.
The girls tennis team played at Uintah Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23 and 24, and the cross country team ran at the SUU Invitational on Aug. 24, but results weren't available by press time. The volleyball team was scheduled to play its season opener at Monticello on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
The Red Devil girls soccer team is the last of the GCHS fall teams to begin play, hosting Emery on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The girls tennis team is also scheduled to host a home invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31, the day after having road matches versus Carbon and Emery. GCHS's cross country team doesn't have to travel too far when it competes in the Lloyd's Lake Classic on Friday, Aug. 30, in Monticello.
