The Grand County High School boys golf team and girls volleyball team each had strong weeks, as the Red Devils won the Region 12 golf tourney at The Hideout in Monticello on Wednesday, Sept. 4, and the volleyball team defeated Emery 3-1 before going 2-1 at a tournament at Wayne High School.


The GCHS boys team bested region-leader Carbon by shooting a 341, six strokes ahead of the Dinos. Richfield was third at 350, followed by Emery at 372, South Sevier at 417 and host San Juan at 434. Carbon hosts Region 12 this week at the Carbon Country Club in Price on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 10 a.m.


On their home court for the first time this season, the volleyball team bested Emery 3-1 as all four sets were hard fought. GCHS won the first set 25-23 and the second set 25-21 before losing the third 25-23. The Lady Red Devils rebounded in the fourth set, however, winning the set 27-25 to take the match.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, GCHS competed in three matches, beating Wayne twice, both by 2-0 scores, and losing 2-1 to North Sevier. The volleyball team has a busy week coming up as it was scheduled to host Monticello on Tuesday, Sept. 10, then Gunnison on Thursday, Sept. 12, before playing at South Sevier on Friday, Sept. 13, and at Richfield on Saturday, Sept. 14.

Varsity play is set for 6:30 p.m., Thursday in Moab, and 5:30 p.m., Friday in Monroe. Saturday's match is a 1 p.m. push through, meaning C-team play begins at 1 p.m., followed by junior varsity and varsity immediately after. The Lady Red Devils also play a tournament in Kayenta, Arizona, on Tuesday, Sept. 17.


The Lady Red Devils tennis team competed at a tournament in St. George on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7, where they beat Cedar Valley 4-1, and lost 4-1 to Viewmont and Ogden, and 3-2 to Delta. In No. 2 singles, Kyla Jackman won three of her four matches. The girls tennis team has the week off from competition before returning to its home court to play Richfield and South Sevier on Thursday, Sept. 19.


The girls soccer team played its first two matches at home last week, losing 5-0 to Emery on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and 4-0 to Richfield on Friday, Sept. 6. GCHS was scheduled to play at South Sevier on Tuesday, Sept. 10. The Lady Red Devils host Carbon on Thursday, Sept. 12 and have their homecoming match versus San Juan on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Both matches begin at 4 p.m.
