Petco Foundation funds HSMV’s spay and neuter services

A $2,500 grant from the Petco Foundation is helping the Humane Society of Moab Valley promote animal welfare in San Juan County by supporting low-cost spay and neuter services.

“This grant is significant because it provides funding to expand our services to animals in San Juan County. Petco Foundation recognized our need and we are grateful for their help,” Humane Society of Moab Valley Executive Director Leigh Ryan said. “Spay and neuter reduces the number of animals entering shelters and directly impacts the number of unwanted animals killed in our nation’s shelters. It also prevents medical and behavioral problems, allowing pets to lead longer, healthier and happier lives.”

The Humane Society of Moab Valley is a nonprofit organization that promotes and provides responsible care for the community’s animals, thanks entirely to donations and grants.

Since 1999, it has spayed or neutered more than 4,100 owned and surrendered dogs and cats.

Approximately 50 volunteers, including a five-person board of directors, contribute 90 percent of the hours required to successfully operate the organization. In the last two years, volunteers donated over 18,000 hours to HSMV activities, and since June 2015, the Humane Society of Moab Valley has helped owners spay or neuter more than 400 San Juan County pets at such clinics.

Most recently, it partnered with the Moab Veterinary Mobile Clinic on Thursday, Sept. 8, to spay or neuter more than 30 pets at the Blanding Ambulance Garage.

The Petco Foundation has invested more than $167 million in lifesaving animal welfare work since 1999.

With more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, it aims to inspire and empower communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and many other lifesaving initiatives.

Through its Think Adoption First program, it partners with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions.
